Nella
Our latest appeal features Nella who came to us with a broken leg following an RTA. Her leg has been pinned at the vets and we are hoping that we can raise some funds towards the costs of her treatment which currently amounts to approx. £1200.
Anyone who wishes to donate towards Nella's care should send
donations to Sue Tipton at the Moorlands Kennels, Condover, Shrewsbury,
SY5 7BS or Julia Benning, Treasurer, Y Bwthyn, Tregeiriog, Llangollen,
LL20 7LA. Cheques should be made payable to Greyhound Rescue Shropshire
& Borders and please mark on the envelope that the money is to go
to "Nella's Leg Appeal".
All donations, however small, will be very much appreciated and we will provide updates on Nella's progress on the website.
Thank you.
Flash

This appeal has now ended and Flash is happily settled in a new home. Many thanks to all who helped this fantastic little dog.
Flash came to us with a problem with one of his back legs. The vets have investigated and believe that he has an untreated fracture. They are confident that the leg can be realigned and this will then allow the muscle to regrow. However, he will need ongoing physiotherapy following the operation and this will, of course, involve additional cost to the charity.
We would therefore be extremely grateful for any help towards the cost of this operation and ongoing treatment and anyone who wishes to donate towards Flash's care should send donations to Sue Tipton at the Moorlands Kennels, Condover, Shrewsbury, SY5 7BS or Julia Benning, Treasurer, Y Bwthyn, Tregeiriog, Llangollen, LL20 7LA. Cheques should be made payable to Greyhound Rescue Shropshire & Borders and please mark on the envelope that the money is to go to "Flash's Leg Appeal".
All donations, however small, will be very much appreciated and we will provide updates on Flash's progress on the website.
Thank you.
Update - 15th April 2009
Flash had an operation on his leg today and now has to spend 8 weeks with his leg in a fixature. He may need further work on his knee but at the moment he seems quite happy and the vets are very pleased with him.
Thank you to everyone who has donated towards his appeal. The veterinary costs so far for Flash's treatment come to over £800 so we extremely grateful for all the help you have given us.
Tam - "Nose Job Appeal" - This appeal has now ended - many thanks to all who helped.

Tam is a very young roughcoated lurcher pup who has been staying in Sue's kitchen now for a few months. When he first arrived he was extremely thin and suffering from respiratory problems which have been treated with various courses of antibiotics.
However, he has never been completely free of his breathing difficulties and further examination has shown that he has a blocked nostril which can only be helped by undergoing an operation to take away some of the cartilage in his nose to allow him to breath properly.
This will be a fairly costly operation but should allow him to lead a much more comfortable and happy life and so we have decided to launch "Tam's Nose Job Appeal" to help raise funds towards his treatment.
Anyone who would like to donate to Tam's Nose Job Appeal should send donations to Sue Tipton at the Moorlands Kennels, Condover, Shrewsbury, SY5 7BS or Julia Benning, Treasurer, Y Bwthyn, Tregeiriog, Llangollen, LL20 7LA. Cheques should be made payable to Greyhound Rescue Shropshire & Borders and please mark on the envelope that the money is to go to Walter's Nose Job Appeal.
All donations, however small, will be very much appreciated and we will provide updates on Tam's progress on the website.
Thank you.
Update at 22 March 2009
Tam had his operation last week and the vet was able to clear a small airway in his nostril. He is now able to breath through that side of his nose and must feel much more comfortable. We are all hoping this will enable Tam to lead a happy and snuffle-free life from now on.
He has also gone to live in a foster home where he is settling down well.
Update at 15 April 2009
Tam is experiencing a few problems at the moment and will need to visit the vet again to see if any further treatment is needed. We will update you when we have further information.
Thank you to all who have supported him. The contributions are continuing to come into us and we are extremely grateful for your help. Veterinary costs for Tam's treatment amount to £1400.
Working with HM Prison
In the past couple of weeks we have begun to build a working relationship with H.M. Prison, Shrewsbury. Just recently a few of us visited the prison to meet Jeannie Spencer who is the Industrial Training Manager. There are two workshops in the prison devoted to textiles and printing.
We were able to explore the possibilities of the prisoners producing a variety of goods for us including dog beds, dog coats and rugs which could be embroidered with our own logo, and items like cards and calendars from the print shop. It is likely that we would need to supply some of the raw materials so we are currently searching local companies for such things as end of roll materials, carpets, wool etc.
We were all very impressed with the skills of the prisoners and the commitment of Jeannie and her staff to produce quality goods. Therefore we would appreciate any offers of the above mentioned materials so that we can get this scheme off the ground.
If you are able to help us, please contact Sue Tipton at the kennels.
Appeal for Tombola Prizes
We are beginning to run short of suitable items for tombola prizes and are hoping that some of you might be in a position to help us out! We raise considerable funds at our various events on our tombola stand and it also helps to draw people in to the marquee.
If you are able to assist - anything in new or very good condition which would be suitable to offer as a prize would be very gratefully received by Brenda on 01691 670037 or Sue at the kennels. Thank you.

The Denzil Appeal
This appeal has now ended - many thanks to all who donated.
Denzil came into our kennels as a 14 week old greyhound pup in April 2008. This is his story:
Early in his young life Denzil seems to have sustained a fracture between knee and hip which wasn't treated. Although he hares around now, the leg will not develop properly without surgery. Our vet believes that as Denzil is so young, it is possible to treat him although it is likely that he will always have one leg slightly shorter than the other.
The operations he needs will cost around £1000 and we have decided to launch "The Denzil Appeal" to help raise funds towards treatment which will enable him to lead a normal, active and happy life.
8 May 2008
Denzil has now taken up residence in Sue's kitchen and needless to say is extremely happy there. The fund has risen to approx £400 so thank you to everyone for their efforts so far!
The vet is hoping to begin work on Denzil's fracture in about three weeks time and we will report on his progress again then.
The Appeal started with the Pearl Vets Dog Walk which took place on Sunday 27th April from Haughmond Hill and raised £55 for Denzil. Our collection tin at Whittington Castle over the Bank Holiday, supervised by Ray, totalled a further £50 and Bethan and Catherine raised £100 at Pets at Home at Telford. Sue Tipton was delighted to discover almost £100 in her collecting tin at the kennels earmarked for Denzil and there have also been several individual donations.
1 June 2008
Denzil had his operation on Thursday and all is going well. The vet has grafted bone from his healthy leg onto his problem leg and we now wait to see how things progress. As everyone who was at the Dog Show on Sunday will have seen, he is in fantastic form, even to the point of walking away with a number of rosettes from the Show!
The Appeal has been a great success and we are so grateful to everyone who has donated to it. We are now waiting to see how much physiotherapy etc will be required following the operation, but already all the efforts put into the fundraising campaign have proved worthwhile.
1 July 2008
Unfortunately there were problems following the first operation and Denzil had to go back to the vets for further treatment. The original pins in his leg had become loose and it was necessary to insert longer pins. Denzil does not appear to have been at all bothered by this and has continued to enjoy life to the full and fulfil his role as Chief Doggie Fundraiser for GRSB! What a star!
2 July 2008
Denzil has started his physio. Fiona performed acupuncture for the first 10 minutes and then he went in to the hydro pool which he wasn't too keen about! Emma, the physio, has recommended he takes short turns in the pool 2/3 times a week. Sue thinks he'll swim for the Olympics after that!
10 July 2008
Unfortunately, things did not progress as we would all have hoped. The vets decided that the leg was not mending and as Denzil had been through so much, there really was no further option but to perform an amputation.
Denzil is now recovering better than we could ever have imagined and seems not to miss the leg at all. Hopefully we will be able to post a photo of Denzil here very soon but meanwhile we would again like to thank everybody for all their support for this young dog.
August 2008
When we visited the kennels this week we found Denzil careering round the garden with Sue's other dogs absolutely oblivious to the fact that he was missing a leg. He is in beautiful condition and is obviously very very happy with life. He spent some time lying in the sun (it only made a brief appearance) and when it became cloudy again he decided to take himself off up the field just in case there might be something there of greater interest than us!
Once again we would like to thank everyone on Denzil's behalf for all the support he has received during this appeal. The funds we have raised have managed to offset the greater part of the vet costs for his treatment thereby ensuring that other needy hounds have not missed out along the way.
